PTC Thermistor Sensor for Heating is also called Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) thermistor. It is a type of temperature-sensitive resistor that exhibits a significant increase in resistance as its temperature rises. It is widely used for heating applications due to its unique heating properties. When used for heating purposes, the PTC thermistor is often referred to as a "self-regulating" or "self-limiting" heater.
The basic construction of a PTC thermistor consists of a ceramic or polymer material doped with a special additive that provides the positive temperature coefficient characteristic. As the temperature of the thermistor increases, the resistance also increases, which means it will draw less current from the power source and generate less heat. This self-regulating feature is what makes PTC thermistors particularly attractive for heating applications as they offer a built-in safety mechanism.

Features of PTC Thermistor Heater
1. Construction: The PTC thermistor with wire is usually cylindrical or disk-shaped, with the PTC material encapsulated in a ceramic or polymer case. The leads or wires are attached to the opposite ends of the thermistor, which allow for easy electrical connections.
2. Electrical Resistance: At lower temperatures, the PTC thermistor's resistance is relatively low. However, as the temperature increases, the resistance rises significantly. This property is exploited for its self-regulating heating behavior.

3. Heating Applications: PTC thermistors with wire are commonly used in heating applications where self-regulation is desired. They are often employed in heating elements for various devices like space heaters, heated seats in cars, hair dryers, and other consumer and industrial heating applications.
4. Temperature Sensing: Besides their heating applications, PTC thermistors with wire can also be utilized for temperature sensing. By measuring the resistance of the thermistor, the temperature of the surrounding environment can be determined.
5. Connection: The wire leads make it easy to connect the PTC thermistor to the rest of the circuit. These leads can be soldered or crimped onto other components, making the integration process simpler.

Once the fault is removed, the PTC thermistor returns to its low resistance state.

When power is initially applied, the thermistor has a low resistance, which limits the current surge. As the device heats up, the resistance increases, allowing normal operation.
5. Self-Regulating Heaters: PTC thermistors are widely used as self-regulating heating elements. When used as heaters, their resistance increases with rising temperature, leading to a reduction in current flow and heat output. This inherent self-regulating property prevents overheating, making them suitable for applications like space heaters, heated seats, and heating pads.
6. Motor Starters: PTC thermistors can serve as effective motor starters in certain applications. By using the thermistor in series with the motor, it acts as a starting element, limiting the high startup current. As the motor reaches its operational speed, the PTC thermistor heats up and increases its resistance, reducing its impact on the circuit.
