Features of PPTC Fuses

How Does A Resettable Fuse work?
A Resettable Fuse, also known as a Polymeric Positive Temperature Coefficient (PPTC) fuse or a Polyfuse, works based on the concept of positive temperature coefficient of resistance (PTC). When there is a normal operating current flow through the PPTC fuse, it behaves as a low-resistance element, allowing current to pass through with minimal voltage drop.
However, when an overcurrent situation occurs, such as a short circuit or an excessive current draw, the PPTC fuse rapidly heats up due to the increased power dissipation caused by the higher current passing through it. As the temperature rises, the polymer material within the PPTC fuse expands, leading to a significant increase in its resistance. This rise in resistance restricts the flow of current, effectively acting as a self-resetting circuit protection device.
The key working principle of a Resettable Fuse can be summarized in these steps:
Normal Operation: During normal operating conditions, the PPTC fuse allows current to pass through with minimal resistance, behaving like a regular low-resistance conductor.
Overcurrent Event: If an overcurrent event occurs, such as a short circuit or an excessive current draw, the current passing through the PPTC fuse increases significantly.
Rapid Heating: The higher current flow generates heat within the PPTC fuse due to its electrical resistance. This causes the temperature of the polymer material inside the fuse to rise.
Polymer Expansion: As the temperature increases, the polymer material within the PPTC fuse undergoes expansion. This expansion causes a physical change in the structure of the material.
Resistance Increase: The polymer material's expansion leads to a substantial increase in the resistance of the PPTC fuse. This increased resistance restricts the current flow through the fuse.
Current Limiting: The higher resistance effectively limits the current passing through the PPTC fuse, protecting the circuit and its components from damage caused by the overcurrent event.
Cooling and Reset: Once the overcurrent event is removed or the current returns to normal levels, the PPTC fuse starts to cool down. As it cools, the polymer material contracts back to its original state, reducing the resistance of the fuse.
Restoration of Circuit: With the resistance back to its low level, the PPTC fuse returns to its original conductive state, allowing current to flow through the circuit again.
